Hollaaa

yo this is Dan, aka Deep Freeze Dfresh, the Dime Findin Funk Fanatic from central Virginia. I'm a senior, an English major, and my three passions are a good scotch, a good story, and Dirty gully bangin Hip Hop. I've been working with Ableton Live for the past couple years, trying to perfect the groove, trying to find the holy grail of beats that will simultaneously resurrect both Biggie and Tupac, but I have not found it yet. This class is my last chance to collaborate with some ill-minded individuals, gifted in the art of the bomb-boogie, and achieve the street dreams that I know are possible. My hopes for this class are to 1) learn about new production techniques, 2) collaborate with some of you talented musicians, and 3) blow up from the flo' up, get famous, and buy a helicopter covered in diamonds. If this sounds appealing to anybody out there, please holler. Can't wait to hear all the great stuff we're gonna cook up.

Hi!

Hi Everyone,

I am a Senior in the Hotel School and am terribly scared about the job market, as I begin to pursue my career post-graduation. Although I do love music (both performing and listening to it), I don't believe that  I will ever hold a job in the music industry. In contrast, food and beverage management seems to be in my future at the moment.

My musical talents are limited to three categories: trumpet, piano, and singing. I played trumpet in my high school marching band, but since I've been to Cornell, I haven't picked it back up -- maybe one day, perhaps. As for the piano, I began to play in high school and just loved it. To this day, I still enjoy playing the piano whenever I have a free moment, especially to break up studying for exams and working on projects. And my singing career is limited to me belting out Dave Matthews Band during my morning shower (and any roommates/neighbors that have accidently had the pleasure of hearing my untrained voice). Perhaps I'll improve one -- maybe two? -- of those talents in this course.

This class should be a fun and exciting challenge for me, because I have never worked with any digital music software programs, beside copying some sheet music using Finale2005 in high school. I am looking forward to meeting you all over the next 14 weeks and am ready for a great semester.

Intro

Hey everyone,

My name is Drew Melmed and I am a senior psychology student. I have a little background in music as I have played the piano, saxophone, and guitar at points throughout my life. However, I am mostly intetrested in hip-hop beat production. I generally "compose" my beats using synthesizers and other sounds as opposed to using samples but I am capable of both. I am looking forward to learning how to better use synthesizers and sound technology in general in order to improve the quality of my beats. The software I currently use for beat production is Fruity Loops.

Blurb?

Hey everyone,

My name is Joe Hakoopian. I'm a senior in Arts with an interest in electronic music production. For the past three years I've been playing around with Garage Band, trying to figure out how to make the sounds that I hear on the radio. More recently I've gotten into Logic, a more powerful yet less user friendly version of Garage Band, and have adopted the belief that I can probably come up with music that is better, or at least more intelligent, than what I hear on the radio. Consequently I've enrolled in music 1421 in order to kick things up to the next level. I realize that many of us have training in a range of musical disciplines and enough interest in digital music making that our projects will all be great. Too, I acknowledge the fact that anything I come up with will be no more radio-worthy than what my classmates will. Though these days, I take pleasure in working with others, mixing "real" music with digital music and performing if I have the chance. Besides, nothing beats slipping a homemade track into a playlist and having friends ask who the artist is because they want some new electronic trakcs on their ipod.

Introduction: Louis Friend

Hey Everyone,

My name is Louis Friend and I am a senior majoring in Applied Economics. I've been a DJ for the past five years. My musical background is limited to a few years of piano. My strengths include anything to do with a turntable. I've used DJ programs like Serato Scratch Live and M-Audio Torq. I've always wanted to take my musical production to a new level. I am from Miami, Florida, and have always wanted to create my own music. Some influential groups and musicians are Cut Chemist, Girl Talk, and Sound Tribe Sector 9.

Introduction

Hey y'all! My name is Lewis King and I am a junior in Operations Research and Information Engineering. I am from Austin, Texas and have lived there almost my whole life. As a kid I played piano for many years and guitar for a year or two, but I ended up pursuing other things and never got to really explore my musical side...so that's why I'm here! I have always been an avid music fan, making sure to attend Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits Music Festivals every year and going out to concerts as much as possible. My interests span from classical to dubstep, but for the last couple of years I have become obsessed with hip-hop. I listen to anything with a killer, intricate beat and smart rhymes and can't wait to learn to make some beats of my own. I would like to gain the skills to collaborate and jam with friends from Cornell and back in Texas.

This is why im HOT..

Wuddup every1, My name is KC Aharanwa, I'm a Econ major transferring to ILR and a sophomore. I was born in Austin, Texas and raised in Dallas, so this Ithaca weather sometimes gets the best of me, its all good tho.. im a soldier! As far as music goes i grew up with it because my house when rarely has any other kind of entertainment, and im quite tha home-body so i dont go out lookn for fun all the time. This meant that I'd listen to anything i could find like my parents old soul vinyls, reggae tapes, hip hop vinyls and tapes, and whatever my Nigerian parents brought from Africa. Unfortunately I was not able to start learning an instrument at an early age, my parents could only afford for one of us to be in band and my older brother won that drawing. So because of this i looked for another way to manifest my love for music and desire to create my own. First i started making mixtapes out of songs recorded from the radio and my parents various music sources and giving them out to my friends. Later on I started to use a program called FL Studio to make my own beats, as hip hop is my favorite genre, i was also lucky enough to get hold of some drumsticks and taught myself to play reggae, hip hop, african style music, and some contemporary rock and all that. I still do both to this day, and musical production has ended up being my passion, and this is class is exactly what I was looking for. Somewhere i can learn more about my passion and exchange ideas with other talented musicians is like a dream come true, I look forward to meeting and blending with everyone in the class and making some ridiculously hot tracks.

Introduction: Charlie J

Heyhey,

My name is Charlie Jiao, I'm a junior pre-med student. But that stuff is boring and music is a lot more fun. I grew up playing piano but stopped at some point in high school and picked up the bass instead. I played with a band for about a year but my musical involvement has slowed since coming to school. I'm taking this class so that I can learn some useful skills that will help me start new bands and music projects here in ithaca.

Introduction

Hello fellow Music 1421'ers

My name is Jeff Shane, and I'm a senior math/econ double major. I'm a very musical person, and I play piano in the Cornell Jazz Ensembles. I also play flute, which I played in marching band in high schoo, but I don't play it very frequently anymore.

One of the main draws for why I chose this class is to do composition in a way that I have never had the chance to before. I write some music on my own, usually something jazzy, latin-y, rock-y, or miscellaneous stuff. I also really like writing and listening to stuff in odd time, because I think it's a really interesting way to create new rhythms and new feels.

I also would like to learn how to use music software to hopefully record and mix my own music. Software-wise, I've used Finale PrintMusic to write sheet music, but have never used any recording software, so I'm really looking forward to learning how to use those.

I would like to do some collaboritive work, perhaps with a guitarist or a wind player. But I'd be willing to try stuff with anybody - just let me know!
