     The _g_t_o_a_s_t_e_r (a.k.a. _g_n_o_m_e_t_o_a_s_t_e_r) is the currently
recommended Linux graphical application for burning audio
and data cds. Audio and data cds also can be burned with
ECMC scripts such as _m_k_a_u_d_i_o_c_d_, _c_p_a_u_d_i_o_c_d_, _m_k_d_a_t_a_c_d and
_c_p_d_a_t_a_c_d. Usage of these scripts is covered in the _e_c_m_c_h_e_l_p
file _c_d_b_u_r_n_i_n_g and in Section 5 of the _E_C_M_C _U_S_E_R_S_' _G_U_I_D_E,
and these scripts are not discussed here.

_g_t_o_a_s_t_e_r is launched by typing _g_t_o_a_s_t_e_r in a shell win
dow. Extensive hardcopy tutorial help is available within
the _L_I_N_U_X _D_O_C_s binder. See also Section 5 of the _E_C_M_C _U_S_E_R_S_'
_G_U_I_D_E_.

The main window includes _F_i_l_e_-_E_d_i_t_-_T_o_o_l_s_-_H_e_l_p tabs that
you will rarely if ever use and a toolbar at the top, four

Before using the application for the first time you must set
up your preferences by clicking on the _S_e_t _P_r_e_f_e_r_e_n_c_e_s icon
on the toolbar. Seven tabs will appear across the top of the
_P_r_e_f_e_r_e_n_c_e_s window that opens. You need not edit the
_I_S_O_9_6_6_0_, _F_i_l_e_t_y_p_e_s or _R_e_c_o_r_d_e_r options; all of the default

the _U_n_i_x _T_r_e_e or _F_i_l_e_n_a_m_e window at the top find your way to
your _s_n_d directory, and drag the WAVE format soundfiles to
be recorded to the lower _T_r_a_c_k_n_a_m_e window. If you are copy
ing tracks from an audio cd, they should appear under the
_/_m_n_t_/_c_d_r_o_m directory (assuming you have loaded the source
disc into the cd-rom drive). Instead of using the _g_t_o_a_s_t_e_r
browser, you can open a KDE or Gnome browser and drag groups
of soundfiles into _g_t_o_a_s_t_e_r's _T_r_a_c_k_n_a_m_e window. To audition
(play) a soundfile, drag it to the _D_r_a_g _n _P_l_a_y icon in the
bottom right corner of the _g_t_o_a_s_t_e_r window. Click this icon
again to stop playback.
As you add soundfiles or tracks from a cd to be copied
into the _T_r_a_c_k_n_a_m_e window, the _F_i_l_l_s_t_a_t_e slider in the bot
tom left corner will show you how much of the disc capacity
you are using. When you have all of the sound sources to be
burned loaded into the _T_r_a_c_k_n_a_m_e window, click on the _D_i_s_c
icon under the TT icon to open the recording options window.
In the recording options window, set the recorder speed
and choose these settings:

_E_j_e_c_t _d_i_s_c if checked, will eject disc when recording is completed

If you will be recording to a CD-RW disc that already
contains data, you must erase the TOC on this disc first. To
blank the disc:
Click on the TT (Track) icon to open the recording
options window. Make sure that the _T_O_C _o_n_l_y box to the
right of the _C_l_e_a_r _d_i_s_c button near the bottom center
of the window is checked. (Otherwise you'll have a l-l-
o-o-o-o-n-n-g-g wait as the entire disc is erased,
which is not necessary.) Then click on either of the
     two _C_l_e_a_r _d_i_s_c buttons.

With data cds all of the input files first will be written
to a temporary image file in _I_S_S_-_9_6_6_0 format before being
recorded to the disc.
Click on the _F_o_l_d_e_r icon (which is above the _T_(_r_a_c_k_) icon
near the lower left corner of the main window.
Using either the _g_t_o_a_s_t_e_r browser or else a KDE or Gnome
browser window, drag icons for files and/or directories to
be archived on the cd into the lower right window (under
_F_i_l_e_n_a_m_e). If you are copying files from an existing data cd
loaded into the cd-rom, you can locate these source files in
the _/_m_n_t_/_c_d_r_o_m mount point. As you add more files, watch
the _F_i_l_l_s_t_a_t_e slider at the bottom of the window to see how
much of the disc's capacity you are using. When all of the
files/directories you wish to archive appear in the _F_i_l_e_n_a_m_e
window:
Click on the _d_i_s_c icon in the lower left window to open
the recording options window to the right. In this window,
set the recording speed, and choose these settings:

_E_j_e_c_t _d_i_s_c if checked, will eject disc when recording is completed
_D_u_m_m_y _w_r_i_t_e check if you wish to do a simulated test burn only

When you are ready to burn the disc, click on the
