Installation instructions ("#" indicates a command-prompt)

Requirements:

  • A reasonably fast computer (the faster the better...)
  • A supported soundcard (see the ALSA "soundcard matrix")
    • if you are concerned about other supported hardware, look here

Instructions:

1. Install Linux Distribution (currently Mandrake 9.0). Important Mandrake-specific instructions can be found here...PLEASE read them carefully.

2. Once in Linux, Download the Turn-Key Linux Audio package (or the "lesser" ECMC-only package).

3. Be sure that you have a network connection, as some packages install at run time (packages whose license prohibits distribution).

4 Unack the Turn-Key tarball, enter the newly created directory, and, as root, run install.sh.

  • See the shell example below for complete commands.

Note: Users can choose to skip the installation of individual apps by commenting them out in "install.sh" before running it. The script syntax is intentionally straight forward -- one line per app -- for this reason.

5. Grab a cup of coffee (or tea) and sit back and watch the code go by (with Ardour, default=yes, installation takes about 40 minutes on my home system, but times may vary). Visit the quickstart, explore and documentation pages to discover everything you have installed.

6. Create /snd/<username> directories for each user (this is where all soundfiles will go). Be certain that you change permissions as well so that this new directory is owned by each respective user (chown <username>:<groupname> /snd/<username>).

7. Be sure that ALSA is configured on you system. Mandrake often does this on its own, but some cards still revert to the older OSS driver. Instructions can be found here.
