As successive Roman leaders took on the status of gods on earth, the term became personi\ufb01ed in them, more generally translatable as \u201cpresence&#8221; or \u201cauthority\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Numina<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was composed for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janustrio.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Janus Trio <\/a>in 2010 as an allegory for the authoritative abuses of Rome&#8217;s current divine authority,\u00a0the Vatican.\u00a0It\u00a0is a public and <em>total<\/em> renouncement of an abusive institution, one catastrophically\u00a0self-undermined by it&#8217;s inability to function\u00a0the face of <strong>the simplest of all moral &#8220;dilemmas&#8221;<\/strong>: the protection of children from\u00a0sexual abuse.<\/p>\n<p>The physical movement of the performers over the course of the piece\u2014from a forward-facing position, to facing inward toward the harp, to finally facing away from the audience\u2014echoes the practice in the Roman Catholic mass of the priest turning his back to the congregation.<\/p>\n<p>The Latin text is from the beginning of the Latin Mass, of baptisms, and of exorcisms. \u201cAbrenuntia?\u201d (Ah-bray-noon-tsee-ah) is a question asked of the congregation, meaning \u201cDo you renounce?\u201d. The response is \u201cAbrenuncio!\u201d (Ab-bray-noon-see-oh), \u201cI renounce!\u201d. \u00a0These questions are part of a formal litany: \u201cAbrenuntia Satanae?\u201d, \u201cDo you renounce Satan?\u201d, and so on. In <em>Numina<\/em> the renouncement is generalized and <em>total<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.music.cornell.edu\/kevinernste\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Numina_notes.pdf\">Numina
