The reference here is to a\u00a0<em>catafalque<\/em>, the scaffolding of a funeral pier \u2013 an image echoed by the physical appearance of the marimba, referring most often to Abraham Lincoln&#8217;s catafalque which he himself dreamed into existence. \u00a0Lincoln&#8217;s catafalque is still used for state funerals including those of presidents Kennedy and Reagan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_480\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-480\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.music.cornell.edu\/kevinernste\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/accessories.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-480 \" title=\"Steel surgical bowls\" src=\"http:\/\/digital.music.cornell.edu\/kevinernste\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/accessories-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/digital.music.cornell.edu\/kevinernste\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/accessories-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/digital.music.cornell.edu\/kevinernste\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/accessories-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/digital.music.cornell.edu\/kevinernste\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/accessories-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steel surgical bowl &#8220;gongs&#8221; for Katafala<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My intent in contemplating Lincoln was to invoke a profound absence of leadership in a time of decision and struggle, a contemporary commentary on the Bush\/Cheney administration. \u00a0The music seeks without finding, it comes back around upon itself without any true progress, it searches for wisdom where none can be found.<\/p>\n<p>In one of many references to Lincoln&#8217;s death (and the attempts to save his life), the following short excerpt from <em>Katafala<\/em> drifts in and out of a dream, using triangles as wind chimes and large steel surgical bowls as &#8220;bells&#8221; and &#8220;gongs&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to Katafala (excerpt):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.music.cornell.edu\/kevinernste\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/katafala_opening.mp3\">Katafala, opening excerpt<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Quotations from the score<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>1. \u201cNow he belongs to the ages.\u201d, page 1 \u2013\u00a0Secretary of War Edwin Stanton at the moment of Lincoln\u2019s death, 1865.<\/p>\n<p>2. \u201c&#8221;In the night there are naturally the seven wonders of the world \/ and greatness, and tragedy.&#8221;, score page 9 \u2013 poet Robert Desnos in<em> Les espaces du Sommeil<\/em> (\u201cSleep&#8217;s Spaces\u201d), the same source text for Witold Lutoslawski&#8217;s work of the same title for baritone and orchestra (which I quote in the timpani).<\/p>\n<p>3. &#8220;Sic Semper Tyranus&#8221;, score page 10 \u2013 John Wilkes Booth&#8217;s shout to the Ford Theatre audience following his assassination of President Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p>4. &#8220;Useless!
