{"id":644,"date":"2011-05-11T19:15:59","date_gmt":"2011-05-11T19:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/digital.music.cornell.edu\/kevinernste\/?p=644"},"modified":"2014-11-21T05:51:09","modified_gmt":"2014-11-21T05:51:09","slug":"seiend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/digital.music.cornell.edu\/kevinernste\/seiend\/","title":{"rendered":"Seiend for brass quintet and live electronics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The title, <em><strong>Seiend<\/strong><\/em> (\u0093\u201cBeing\u0094\u201d)&#8211;pronounced &#8220;zye-ent&#8221;&#8211;is a somewhat unused German participle found primarily in philosophical writings, referring to the &#8216;true and honest self&#8217;, a life lived without pretenses or embellishments. It is also an acronym for \u0093\u201cEidens\u0094\u201d and is dedicated to my first music teacher, Gene Eiden, and through Gene to his wife Francis whose support made Gene&#8217;s seemingly unending generosity possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.music.cornell.edu\/kevinernste\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/gene_eiden.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-648\" title=\"Gene Eiden\" src=\"http:\/\/digital.music.cornell.edu\/kevinernste\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/gene_eiden.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a>The staged performance contains several symbolic references to Mr. Eiden and his long-time roles as band leader and solist. First, a solo trumpet is isolated from the quintet and appears front-of-stage throughout the work. The soloist turns, at times, to play with the quartet and even sits facing them at one point, acting as their &#8220;director&#8221;. During this seated section, the music echoes J.S. Bach&#8217;s <em>Bist du Bei Mir<\/em> (&#8220;Be Thou With Me&#8221;; original melody by Gottfried Heinrich St\u00f6lzel), a piece that I learned through Gene and one that inspired me to ask him about beginning to compose music.
