How do I record without erasing?

Submitted by msnyela on Mon, 2005-09-26 18:57.
I'm having trouble punching in. I have something I really like but I want to sustain it a little longer...when I record it erases the whole thing. Is there a way I can record without erasing what was there and just cross fade? I hope this is understandable.

Overdub

Overdub (erase) style recording is not the default but someone may have set it that way before you.  In the far left area of the Cubase transport you will see the recording/punch-in settings.  The top one refers to audio and should be set to  "Normal", not "Mix" or "Overdub" (I believe these are the settings, I'm not in front of the application...the screenshot image below was found on Google).  Set it to Normal if it is not there already.

In this mode Cubase will write a new block on top of the other.  THe two blocks can be resized, overlapped, crossfaded, etc, as desired.
