live questions

So I managed to get a loop going in Live where I could record stuff and keep layering. But it was a bit awkward because there was a delay each time while I fixed the loop length on the new sample and then hit play. Is there a way to get it to play right when I'm done recording?- I guess this would necessitate it stopping recording right on time too. This is especially a problem if I want to build something from scratch live, because while I'm fixing the first sample, there is dead air. Also, is there a way in Live to cue the recording with the metronome, rather than having the recording and the metronome start at the same time? -David

further developments...

... in the endless saga that is my music project. So I figured out that if you hit the blinking red play button on a track while it's recording it will switch to a blinking green play button and will, you guessed it, start playing right after the quantization mark (hurrah!).

However, I can't just click the record button twice before I start recording- I have to click the track while it's already recording, so I'm kinda in the same place as before with needing a pedal if I'm recording anything where I need to use my hands to play it.

I tried the QS8 pedal as a MIDI switch, but Live, while it sees the MIDI input of the pedal, won't link the pedal to a button. Know of any way to trick the MIDI input somewhere of thinking the QS8 pedal is a MIDI note or a keyboard key?

not sure...

I'm not sure your answer addresses my question- maybe I wasn't clear. I don't want to remove quantization- I like how when I hit stop or play on each sample, they wait until the timing is right until they start.

What I don't like is that while I've got the loop running, say on an 8 bar quantization, it will keep recording past the 8 bar mark and I'll have to stop it recording (with or without quantization), set the loop in that particular sample to 8 bars, and then hit play on it and wait until the timing is right for it to start. What I want to happen is for it to record 8 bars and then right when the 8 bars are up, start playing the just-recorded sample without me having to set anything.

The solution that I think might work, is with the quantization set, press record, and then after the recording is started, press stop on the sample (which won't stop it from recording until after the 8 bars are up), and then press play on the sample while I'm still recording, which should make it play right after it stops recording. The problem with this is that it sort of requires me to be doing stuff on the keyboard/mouse while I'm playing my bass or guitar or whatever. So either I need an assistant or a pedal that can act as a midi switch- but I think even the pedal might not work because it needs to be tied to a button for a particular sample which is just being recorded, so I don't think I can set the trigger...

PS. Soon we will be looking

PS. Soon we will be looking at another live looping sampler called "SooperLooper". It's a free application that runs on Mac and Linux. It requires the JackOSX audio routing tool. You can take a look at it here:

Yes, you will not get a gap if your quantization is set to "None". Otherwise the loop waits for the quantization cycle to start.

There is one other way to handle this, see "Launch modes" in the Live Manual (found in the help menu).

There is also quantization available at the clip level (double-click on the sample and see its launch properties).

Not that I know of. By the way, the metronome sound goes to the "cue out" (the alternate headphone out) so one can monitor the metronome click separate from the sound going out to the speakers. This would allow you to trigger samples based on a running metronome.
