introductions

Greetings

Hi Everyone,

I'm Chris McGuire, a senior in Arts and Sciences, majoring in Earth and Atmospheric Science. I've played trumpet for about 12 years, and am mostly classically trained, although I do have a lot of experience playing in various jazz ensembles. I've also started singing quite a bit during the last couple years.  I'm currently involved in a band named Funk Apteryx, which I sing and play trumpet for, as well as Jazz Voices (An on campus jazz singing group that was started last year).

Electronic music has been a fast growing interest of mine over the past couple years.  I'm incredibly excited about an opportunity to learn about it in a class, and am really looking forward to this semester.

Can't wait to start making music!

Introduction

My name is Devin. I'm a senior math and philosophy double major. I play drums and other percussion instruments (i.e. anything that makes a sound when you hit it). I am also teaching myself piano.

As a percussionist, I'm really interested in turning everyday and found objects into musical instruments- and I intend to take this to an extreme in this class, as I see a computer as just another "everday object" that people have managed to turn into a musical instrument.

I'm also planning on using Linux in this class, so if anyone else is planning on doing that, let me know!

Introduction

Hi, my name is Taisa.

I study cellular and molecular bio, and plan on going to med school... so this class is really outside of anything I have studied. I really enjoy listening to music, but don't have a background in music composition. I originally became interested in digital music through a visual studies course that focused on technologically enhanced music and images. I am looking forward to getting outside of my field and hoping to find some new ways to look at technology and how it pertains to art. I also love being outside, particularly sailing and snowboarding.

Introduction

Hi everyone, my name is Neal Murphy and I am a Arts and Sciences sophmore.  I transferred from the Albany College of Pharmacy.  I love all kinds of music except for country.

I've played the piano since I was seven.  Recently, over the past three years I have been composing pieces of my own for the piano.  I am really interested in taking this class because I have never worked in a studio before or with digital music programs, and I want to work with the pieces that I've created.  Perhaps someday, I would like to start a band but for now I am looking forward to working in the studio...

Introduction

Hello, everyone my name is James Ballantine, I am a Hotel School Senior from Conneticut. My musical background is not particularly original: I generally listen to classic rock and like most college students I play guitar.

I am taking this class because I have always wanted to see if I could get something in my head to come out of speakers. My experiences with composition thus far have been frustrating due to my own personal limitations. Hopefully, having access to technology and the knowledge of how to use it will let me overcome some of those limitations.

Introduction

Hey all, my name's Dan Dryden; I'm a junior in Materials Science and Engineering, and my weapon of choice is the bass guitar. My musical tastes favor anything 'prog', but mostly metal (Opeth, Dream Theater, Between the Buried and Me), classical (Brahms, Berlioz, Shostakovich), and a some classic and indie rock around the edges.

I'm taking this class mostly because I'm a total gearhead when it comes to music; I've found that a deeper understanding of the theory and technology behind sound and sound production only enhances my enjoyment of the music itself. I've built a couple bass guitars, and spent more time than could possibly be worth my while learning about the technology therein. I really want to get into more direct sound engineering and composition, though, and this class seems perfectly suited to the task.

If anyone's interested, there exists only one recording of my band, playing a gig at The Nines last year. The sound quality isn't great, but I still figure it's worth posting.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Kevin.

I'm a Sophomore in Engineering, probably Electrical and Computer Engineering or Engineering Physics. I use open source software to record multi-track sessions at home, me on drums, my dad on bass, and my uncle and cousin on guitars. I want to learn more than the mechanics of how the recording process works; I want to lean how to master every phase of it

My favorite genre of music is progressive rock/metal -- my favorite bands are Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, Porcupine Tree, Yes, Rush, Genesis, and some others. I've got a special place in my heart for jazz and blues, too, as I played alto sax for 9 years.

Like others have mentioned, I also know nothing about writing and composing music; we just improv at home, and that's pretty easy for a drummer. It'd be great to learn some of that in a hands on, less theoretical way.
I'm excited to apply what I learn to my work with WVBR, and I'm jonesing to play with those 1300W speakers like everybody else. It's going to be a good semester.

Hi

Hi my name is Ebonie Greene and I'm a senior sociology major. I've been playing bass guitar on and off for almost 4 years. I want to take this class to regain my interest in making music and because I think it'd be interesting to make electronic music. I've never made or editted music digitally before, so I think it'd be fun to experiment with the different programs we'll use in this class.

Introduction

Hi, my name is Bryan Sutermaster.  I am a senior in Biological Engineering.  I am a drummer and play in a funk band at Cornell called The Strange Attractors.  I am really into all genres of music, and love to be introduced to new bands and artists.

I am  taking this class for many reasons.  I am very involved with the program house Just About Music (JAM), and have recently helped the dorm build a new recording studio.  I would like to become versed in multi-track recording so that I can help students and bands (as well as my band!) record.  Also, I am very interested in incorporating some electronics into my drum kit to augment my performances.  Finally, I would like to use this course to get my feet wet in composing.

Introduction

Hi, I'm Eric, a senior math&philosophy double major.  I wrote solo (ambient-ish) songs on keyboard and sang and synthesized in rock bands in high school, but couldn't find people with similar musical interests at Cornell.  I started recording music on my computer, mostly with synthesizers, microphones, and instruments that I make.  I love to experiment, but in the aftermath of noise rock I have enduring commitments to harmony; particularly to 5ths, 7ths, and 9ths.  My artist name is Black Candy Kruschev, and I'm trying to teach my music how to give birth to itself.  Recently I have been dabbling in african-influenced beats.
