Come join us for a live electronics performance/ dance party at Ithaca's haven for underground music, Pixel.
Six long years after the Odyssey nightclub shut its doors, closing the chapter on the local rave scene, locals will be treated to a taste of electronic dance music's current state in evolution with an event featuring ambassadors of the new techno sound.
Special guests, Hemiptera, will be forging a full-on Berlin-style dance party with a live performance and dj set. Hemiptera, a duo comprised of husband and wife dj team Montrealer Yanni Ehm and California native Jennifer Clemente, helped fuel San Francisco's minimal techno explosion with their signature Filter.SF parties, which featured the first U.S. performance of Japan's biggest name in techno, Fumiya Tanaka. Now on the East Coast, the two have been heavily involved in developing their own imprint on the techno genre and producing tracks through a collaboration with Quebec City producer Maxime Tanguay, label boss of experimental dance music netlabel Pertin.Nce.
Early on, the party will feature local sound artists, Misha Mross and Dave Brown, of the group, D.A.M.A.G.E., who perform live electronics using a variety equipment. Armed with synthesizers, laptops, and even a beach ball outfitted with an electronic controller, D.A.M.A.G.E. demonstrates extraordinary versatility, producing tracks in a variety of genres, including hip-hop and IDM (intelligent dance music). They have an extensive performance history, which includes performances at Google headquarters and Cornell University's Sound Art forum.
Warming up the night for these two great acts will be Ithaca's own DJ Laika, a notable and up-and-coming dj who has performed at the Lost Dog Lounge, Pixel and with the Cornell Electronic Music Collective at Level B in Collegetown. In addition, she has performed alongside the Bay Area Beat Drop Collective at the acclaimed 111 Minna art gallery, based in San Francisco.

Open Sound Control "addresses"
As we discussed tody in lecture, the OSC protocol allows for complex communication to and from any device on the network and, by it address (/1-a/3, etc) and to any object within the device or application receiving it. The complete specification can be found here:
The most important section on the page tells us about address wild cards and groupings. Today we did things like:
/*/3 55
...which would send the message "55" to every "3" within every object. I mentioned that I was unclear about other methods of specifying the address so here are the answers.
* means all members
[1234] or [abc], "brackets" mean a match on each character
{23,45,56,456,1,2} comma separated groups are in curly brackets
Other methods are listed on the above-linked Spec page.
Also, I wanted to link you to some potential uses, others who are already using OSC to organize themselves and their material plus several technologies that have sprung up around it.
Some areas of use: http://opensoundcontrol.org/osc-application-areas
Hard/Soft implementations: http://opensoundcontrol.org/implementations
FLOSC: http://www.benchun.net/flosc (Flash to OSC for web interactive pieces)
Occam: http://www.mat.ucsb.edu/%7Ec.ramakr/illposed/occam.html (OSC to MIDI app)
There are hundreds of other tools floating around on the web and many implementations for commercial applications such as Live!, Max/MSP, Reaktor, and others.
Of course don't miss the monome.
Elliot Hess in Tjaden Gallery
One of your colleagues (Music 659), artist/composer Elliot Hess, has an exhibition next week in Tjaden Galley (on the arts quad across from the Johnson Museum). His description is as follows:
"The show consists of paper sculpturesproduced from suspended fabric moulds and collages on paper. The opening will be on Thursday night from 6-9 pm in Tjaden Gallery."
I hope you can make it!
Pd-extended master object list
See the attachment. This is stage1 of a larger project to build a Pd-extended master patch. I'm hoping to just build a script that would automatically generate a master patch from libraries loaded at start up...that's the end goal, anyway.
