GROOVE THERAPY I was recorded, so look for that recording in the near future!
THIS IS NOT SLOPEDAY. Friday 2PM until sunrise

After years of oppression by a close-minded programming board, this year dance music strikes back majestically.
This is a celebration of youth and absurdity, of life and love. Slope Day has become a commercial shitshow and a disappointment to everyone, an excuse to get drunk, but without a good party for which to drink.
If you're fed up with mainstream no-names, crowd pleasers, and depressing emo confessions THIS IS NOT SLOPEDAY.
If you believe dancing is a fundamental expression of love, life, and the human spirit, THIS IS NOT SLOPEDAY.
If you just want to get crazy to sexy, summery, red-hot house, techno, and trance in the open air from multiple DJs who love every minute of what they do THIS IS NOT SLOPEDAY. Dance for the future, dance for love, dance for life, dance for a better world.
$3 cups or BYOB.
The revolution begins at 2 pm and goes until after sunrise.
I will be playing probably 6-8 hours of the time sets ranging from progressive house to tribal house to classic deep progressive trance to minimal techno...
Andrew Garcia from IC will probably play a similar amount of time, mostly epic trance and tech trance
We will also have some guest DJs playing in between sets.
I encourage you to come and hear things you never imagined existed
sample resynthesis
related to the hammer time video we watched in class, i have had this idea for sometime, to make music out of music.
- procure a relatively long sample (spoken, musical, etc, probably something more tonal would work better)
- divide the sample into grains of spectrally meaningful length
- perform sample analysis on the grains
- create a database of the collection spectral data
from here, i imagine loading in another sample and then mapping the data 'ghosts' of the grains on top of the other sample so as to rewrite the host sample in terms of the collaged spectral memory of the original granulized sample. now you can think of the host sample as transformed from sound into a blueprint or digital notation which approximates the sound of the host sample using bits of the first sample which was cut up.
this data is then used to resynthesize the sound. the way the data is used will be controlled by which patch is selected on a custom resynthesizer. you could think of it kind of like a vocoder. the resynthesizer is an interpreter which will translate the spectral data differently depending on the patch. the patches would be fluid and parametric, so that one would mix aspects of different patches to create a hybrid sound. (check out native instruments fm8 for an example).
at the point of performance, the data streams through the program and then using a midi controller, a musican gives it color and life by blending/scaling/mixing various parametric patches. this leaves the musician free to improvise and to reinterpret through resynthesis, the host sample.
for maximum performance effect I would recommend that the host sample be something like the work of the student that goes directly before this project in the concert, so that the audience would understand that it is being resynthesized and manipulated clearly.
the 'grafted' sample needs to be meaningfully chosen to complement or parody or deconstruct/etc the host sample.
in fact, i might also argue that the host sample needs to be multiple samples, bits of different student's performances throughout the night.
the original sample should be a simple melodic theme that might be played at the introduction and the intermissions, so as to create recognition in the audience
let me know if you're interested i don't think i can do this alone

Remix of Unconditioner by Fast Unicorn (Misha Mross)
you might remember misha's track from the previous in class concert. i asked him for it so i could play out at a party. he gave me it broken down into tracks and i decided to remix it to fit into one of my sets nicely
here's the result:
Fast Unicorn - Unconditioner (Adam Vana's Dark Condition Dub)
Static MP3 (Right Click Save As)
Streaming Online Player
it's sort of a crossover track, part dark tribal, part progressive house, part trance. i had someone even describe it to me as 'slowed down goa trance'. in any case the track occupies a critical part of the set where i transition to faster tempos and darker sounds usually before i hand the decks off to a trance dj
software used:
ableton live
soundforge
dblue glitch vst
audacity
various software synthesizers
it was about 25 tracks connected in all ways to one another and running through dozens of vst effects and native live effects. the more i worked on it the less i was able to work on because after running for 5 seconds it began to chug. i don't really like to render the tracks as i go because i like having everything controllable until the last minute. so i had to basically undertake a campaign of rendering to hear every minute change...
anyways, it was fun and a great experience making a polished track that I am comfortable playing out, and I will get to test it on a crowd this friday.
Brand New Mix: Adam Vana - Into The Deep
Hey,
So I finally got around to recording a promo on my new DJ setup. This is the result.
This mix is deep and progressive, with some old school vibes. I think it might appeal to a range of audiences because there's a little something for everyone.
Begins with some ambient and breaks, then goes right into deep house and some progressive house, moving into some downright oldschool tech house and finishing on a with some progressive electro in a major key

NEW MIX: Adam Vana pres. Groove Therapy

Those of you who stayed late for "Behind The Decks" heard a set from me, one that I had been planning for the EMC essential mix series. I didn't record it that night, but when I woke up the next day I took the time to record it proper.
What it ended up as I feel is a highly energetic yet deep, feel-good house party mix. I don't know if any of you heard my Music For Jungles Mix, but this one is considerably different and not as theme-obsessed. Style ranges from dark and emotional minimal techno to deep house to progressive house to electro and tribal house before drifting away with some emotional prog. It's meant to be dramatic, and it's meant to be narrative. I hope it carries you away as you listen...but above all it's just two hours and a bit of corporal groove therapy...
