EMC Essential Mix Debut - TONIGHT, 8 PM

Hi,

First of all, cheers to everyone who made it down to south hill for the EMC house party last night.  It was probably one of the best house parties I've played here in Ithaca, great sets all around, from 10:00 pm to about 3:30 am when the police closed it down haha.  It was really fun.  Next friday there will be another big party sponsored by the Ithaca Electronic Music Guild, with whom we are quite connected.  I'll be playing with two of IC's best DJs - full announcement to come this week.

Anyways, The Electronic Music Collective is beginning a weekly tradition on its new internet radio station in the tradition of the BBC Radio 1 show.  Every Sunday at 8 PM we are going to feature an EMC or affiliate DJ in a continuous 2 hour mix, showcasing basically the essential style of that DJ.  For this reason, the show is called, The EMC Essential Mix.

Tonight at 8PM we are kicking the show off with a set I prepared entitled "Music For Jungles". (an obvious brian eno reference)  I will be playing Deep, Dark Progressive, Tribal, and Tech House with moments of ambient and tribal trance.  This is dance music for rainforests, and you will hear a lot of my own thematic re-edits and mashups of tracks.

TUNE IN at 8 PM here:

1. [66:00] Glaciation - Glaciation
This is a mixed set of original productions by two producers from the online community, tranceaddict.com. Start the saturday off with a chilled, balearic feel.

2. [90:35] Sasha - Live @ Privilege Manumission.
This is a classic Sasha set from around 2003 recorded in Ibiza.  Enjoy a lazy afternoon and kick back to some delicious progressive house and trance.

3. [79:43] Deep Dish - Clubland Pacha Part II
Another balearic set this time from legendary duo deep dish at legendary club, pacha.

STEAMY LAWLER (DINNER SHOW)
4. [120:01] Steve Lawler - Essential Mix (7/16/2000)
A "Deep & Devastating" dark tribal set by UK DJ Steve Lawler, tonight's dinner show, "STEAMY LAWLER".

5. [119:31] Trentemoller - Essential Mix (10/14/2006)
Voted Essential Mix of the year, this is a work of pure genious perfect for starting off your night.

6. [179:58] Sander Kleinenberg - Live @ Happy Monday
3 Hour live set from famed DVDJ Sander Kleinenberg.  MASSIVE, listen to this before you go out tonight (to the EMC party of course).  Remy, this includes a transition from Kurd Maverick - The Rub, to Rene Amesz & Peter Gelderblom - Climb The Wall.  And how about ending with Daft Punk - Around The World... classic.

7. [79:02] Victor Calderone - Live @ Mania (7/29/2006)
Massive set from this crazed tribal DJ, but you should be at the EMC house party by this time.  ;)

8. [102:46] Paul Van Dyk - Fritz Soundgarten (2/15/2006)
Great set from PvD's radio show on fritz soundgarten earlier this year.  Features the 1984 acid house classic, one of the tracks that started it all, Phuture - Acid Trax, mixed with two great pig and dan productions.

9. [73:03] DJ Tiesto - Live @ Energy 2000
Tiesto's New Year's Eve Set from his millenium performance in the Netherlands.  This set for me carries the hope, promise, and energy that trance at the turn of the millennium carried.  Truly a great set.

10. [78:22] DJ Left - Progressive Sounds 10
This is a mix from a lesser known dutch DJ left, of whom I am quite fond.  The mix is pretty much dark, progressive and tribal house with a bit of a tech edge.

11. [60:21] Rob Turner - Twilight Ride
A great winter mix  (progressive house) from Madison, WI based DJ, Rob Turner.  Great sequence of tracks, and a truly uplifting peak make this mix pure pleasure for the ears.

12. [119:18]  Ame - Essential Mix (7/23/2006)
Berlin's duo Ame puts out a great two hour mix for the BBC.  Great music for you insomniacs and those recovering from the EMC party tonight.

EMC House Party (Saturday, January 27, 2007)

This weekend I'm playing a house party with my friend and fellow DJ Andrew Garcia, who heads an electronic music group at IC.  I'll be playing deep progressive and tribal house with a touch of electro and minimal, and then Andrew will be finishing the night with melodic trance.  It's going to be a sort of low-key gathering, but you're invited to come and enjoy the sounds and the company.  If you are interested in hearing two local deejays playing some absurd, fresh, mind-blowing and body shaking electronic music that will keep you dancing straight for 6-8 hours in a south hill loft overlooking lake cayuga and cornell please email me (amv34) and I will give you directions.

Project opportunity: music and visual art

From Mark Pearson (mtp32):

I am a student in the art department and am working on a project that is investigating the interconnections between visual art and music, specifically visual representations of music.

The first part of the project involved creating a graphical system for transcribing music and then making a drawing that transcribed a specific piece.

To continue with the project, I would like to find some musicians who would be willing to use my drawing as a score, and who would reinterpret the piece without any knowledge of what song it  actually is or how it originally sounds. The reason for doing this is to see how different the final piece would turn out when being interpreted by musicians who will have specific directions, but not ones that they are familiar with, such as standard notation.

I am attaching a file to this that is a scanned image of the drawing so you can have a better idea of what I'm talking about.  Please e-mail me back if you find this idea interesting in order to discuss more specific ideas and logistics.

Back online with a new look

At long last, digital.music.cornell.edu is back online and looking better than ever.  It turns out there was a hardware problem with the old host but all data seems to have been preserved (thankfully!).

In any case, it's good to have the site back online and ready to use.  Feel free to post to the new Blog, ask questions on the Forums, upload your images, and soon audio and video will be online in addition to a new chat mechanism (should be up within the week).

EMC with Girl Talk, Professor Murder, FRIDAY

The Fanclub Collective presents: GIRL TALK with Professor Murder and the EMC Friday, October 27, 2006 9 PM - 2 AM @Castaways 413 Taughannock Blvd $8 Cover, $7 with costume 18+, 21+ to drink On Girl Talk: "[Greg aka Girl Talk] Gillis takes the best parts of every song you ever liked and strings them together to create the hottest party mix you can fathom. Yeah, I know you downloaded it as soon as our friends at Pitchfork told you to, but I know this motherfucker – throw some change at his shit." "On Unstoppable, the second full-length album by Gillis under the moniker Girl Talk, instead of keyboards and spastic rock, Gillis destroys pop, R&B, and dance music with meticulous flair. Gillis is often portrayed as a dance party vagabond in fluorescent garb, but Unstoppable, for all its sweaty beats and sexy grooves, paints a picture of Gillis that’s just as much mad scientist as oversexed party animal. Gillis’ manic experiments bring life to inanimate rhythms, and swap the personalities of unwitting samples in harebrained schemes to make bottoms shake and fists pump." On Professor Murder: "Professor Murder is a dance-funk quartet from New York City that mixes synthesizers and percussion-based compositions in a method inspired by the post-punk bands of the late '70s and early '80s. They released critically hailed debut EP, Professor Murder Rides the Subway, on Kanine Records in July of 2006. Members of the band are Jesse Cohen (keyboards), Andy Craven (drums), Michael Bell-Smith (vocals, percussion, bass, keys), and Tony Plunkett (bass, melodica)." Alex Krivicich (DJibouti) and I will be opening from 9 pm to 10:30 pm, at which point professor murder is playing for a bit, then girl talk for a bit (i believe they only have 45 minute shows) and then Alex and I are spinning for the rest of the night, until 2. Alex and I will be spinning a filthy, bodily, banging set of funky electrohouse, tech house, minimal house, and tribal house. We'll also be doing our first live VJ performance with the event. Hope to see you there, this one's going to be be ridiculous.
