Assignment 0: Yuqi Guo

Hi all! My name is Ruby and I’m a senior in Animal Science. I had played the violin for eight years from elementary to high school and then stopped. After that I sometimes picked it up during breaks and gladly found I could still play. I tried to learn guitar by myself recently though there’s little progress. I was also a member of the school chorus before I transferred to Cornell. I’m taking this course because I’m curious about how music is produced and hope to acquire some basic and practical knowledge. I’d love to collaborate with and learn from others!

Assignment 0: Lily Pagan

Hi everyone! My name is Lily and I am a senior studying Information Science. I have always been interested in music, as I have played the piano classically since I was six and have also picked up the guitar and flute. I am also involved in acappella on campus and have some experience composing/mixing electronic music, but would like to expand my knowledge of different audio softwares and how to properly use them. I am excited about experimenting with different sounds (both instruments and sounds we hear everyday) and seeing how they come together.

Assignment 0: Elsa Leung

Hey everyone! My name is Elsa and I’m a senior in the Hotel School. I used to play piano and flute for many years, and I picked up the french horn during high school. I’m really excited to take this class to learn how to use audio software and music production overall. It would be cool to learn how to make a mix and make something from various samples into a track. I generally listen to a lot of EDM, and my favorite genre is progressive house.

Assignment 1421: Darren Chow

Hi All, my name is Darren, I’m currently a senior from Hong Kong majoring in economics. I was just able to join this class today (September 5). I have a slight musical background, joining the band for 5 years in middle school (playing the piano/clarinet/oboe), however I have forgot everything I have learned. I am interested in this class because I want to see the basics of how electric music is made (specifically EDM if possible) and see if I can recreate some of the sounds that I hear in my favorite artists (such as Illenium, Zedd, etc.). I am interested in collaborating with others who share a similar interest!

Assignment 0: Daniel Nagar

Hello,

My name is Daniel Nagar and I am a senior in ILR. I love to sing and have been playing guitar for 12 years. I am not in a formal band but I often perform at open mic events in Ithaca. I love lots of different types of music such as rock, reggae, electronic, and soul. I am interesting in this course because I have attempted to learn different music production softwares in the past but have never succeeded. I want to write my own songs but I feel that my lack of music production skills makes this more difficult. I am very interested in collaborating with others and am looking forward to developing my music skills and knowledge this semester.

Assignment 0: Hyoann Choi

Hello everyone,

I am so happy to finally get into this class that I have been waiting since my freshman year. I am a senior in BEE now and enrolled in this class to enrich some artistic spirit in myself mostly filled with STEM spirit. I have played some piano and Korean traditional musical instruments. I am always eager to learn more music, but I did not get a chance to and now this is the opportunity for me to enjoy. Hope to have fun!

Assignment 0: Tyler Fein

I’m Tyler and I am a senior Applied Economics and Management student minoring in Music and Communication. I have been playing the saxophone and guitar for numerous years, and have some performance experience on both. I am primarily in this class to most effectively record my own music, and am extremely excited to learn.

Assignment 0: Jeremy Baxter

Hey y’all, I’m Jeremy Baxter. I’m a senior majoring in music, and a keyboardist, vocalist, and composer. I sing in four different vocal groups on campus, and direct two of them, including being the Music Director of The Hangovers.

In this class I’m first of all hoping to learn some of the basics of recording, mixing, and producing music. It’s been a goal of mine for a long time to self-produce a solo album. In an entirely different realm, I have also been working on an idea for a more experimental composition which would use edited samples of highway sounds, and I will be especially attuned to looking for ideas and techniques to apply to that project. I’m also ready and excited to jump at new musical ideas though, and although I haven’t done a lot of collaborative music writing in the past, I am open to it!

Assignment 0: Chris Paradis

Hi all,

My name is Chris Paradis and I’m a senior studying Psychology and Business.

Music is an important part of my life, and I began making songs around the spring of my sophomore year. I am eager to learn more about the core concepts of digital music including mixing, recording vocals, and effectively using samples to create hip hop tracks.

Currently, I’m a signed artist for Electric Buffalo Records (an on-campus student run record label) and hope to utilize the skills and I knowledge I develop in this course to improve my contributions to EBR.

I look forward to a fantastic semester and feel very grateful to have received a spot in the class!

Best,
Chris

Assignment 0: Natalie Murphy

Hi All! My name is Natalie Murphy and I’m a Senior in ILR. This is my first music class at Cornell, but I’ve been playing instruments for much of my life. I took piano lessons for 10 years and played for my high school’s jazz choir, but more recently I’ve picked up the guitar as well. I have a little performance experience through jazz choir and a few solo performances I have done over the years. I’m taking this class because I want to push myself out of my comfort zone and learn the technical side of making music. I’ve never tried my hand at songwriting and this class seems like a good place to start. I do still play my instruments and have a few guitars and a mandolin here at school and am very interested in collaborating with others in the class.
