My name is Matt Chen and I am a senior Biology and Society major in the College of Arts and Sciences. I’ve been a musician for most of my life, playing piano since the age of 6, picked up guitar and ukelele about 4 years ago, and currently in the process of learning the drums. My music tastes span multiple genres, though, so I’ve always been really into electronically produced music as well, and I’m just interested in getting to learn about the inner workings of music like that and hopefully produce my own content through this course.
Assignment 0: Stephen Newcomb
Hey guys! My name is Stephen, I am a junior pursuing an independent major in Immersive Computing focusing around Virtual and Augmented Reality. I have been playing the saxophone for about 10 years and also play some other random instruments like tuba and clarinet. I’m really passionate about jazz ever since I joined my middle school’s jazz band and play in the jazz ensemble on campus. I am also a huge gamer and am extremely interested in game design, ludomusicology and sound design for video games. I have worked with Ableton Live 10 to make music for the Intro to Game Design course and my roommate and I make music together in our spare time, but I still haven’t really gotten a firm grasp on all the in’s and outs of the software so I am extremely excited for this class!
MUSIC 1421: Assignment 0 – Ethan Goolish
Hey all,
My name is Ethan Goolish, and I’m a senior studying Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics with interests in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. I’ve always loved listening to music casually, whether that be experimenting with different genres or building up different playlists, but never have had the opportunity to be able to create something myself. I played piano for many years when I was younger, but have fallen out of practicing since college. I dabbled around with some free DJ software freshman year (Virtual DJ and a little bit of Audacity), but am excited to be able to learn formally. Can’t wait to see what everyone brings to the table and I’m sure I’ll be astounded by the creativity of all you classmates.
I primarily listen to a wide range of EDM nowadays (Illenium, San Holo, Gryffin, Louis the Child, MiTis, Inukshuk, Said the Sky, Jai Wolf, Ekali, Madeon, Odesza, Porter Robinson).
Music 1421 Assignment 0: Crystal Lee
Hi everyone! My name is Crystal and I’m an M. Eng student studying biomedical engineering. I’ve played the violin for 13+ years now. While I’ve participated in a bunch of orchestras and chamber groups, my favorite part of making music has always been improvising and jamming out with fellow musicians. I loved composing as a kid, and that drive to create my own music never left me – which is what brings me here. I’ve been dying to learn how to produce songs and to learn how to use the digital tools available today to make all kinds of new sounds. Throughout the semester I hope to figure out how to produce my own catchy pop song, heartfelt ballad, and epic movie soundtrack.
My hobbies include drawing (digital art), language learning (French, Japanese, Korean), singing, and voice acting. Let me know if you have any ideas that call for these misc. skills, I’d love to collaborate!
Assignment 0
I took this class because I like music and computers. I play the trumpet and ukulele and like playing music with people. I hope that through this class I can make music with people and make new friends!
MUSIC 1421 Assignment 0: Iris Gou
Hi everyone! I’m Iris and I’m a senior studying Applied Economics and Management, with a minor in music. Music has always been a big part of my life, but I’ve been more of an appreciator rather than a creator since coming to Cornell. I started off with the piano when I was roughly 7 years old and later on picked up the violin, but I don’t play either instrument very often nowadays as seems to be standard with a lot of Cornellians.
I consume a lot of music, which has led me to want to learn more about the production side. I listen to a wide variety of music, but recently, I’ve been listening to a lot of ambient electronic, “IDM” (for lack of a better term), post-punk & revival, noise, and math rock. As the semester progresses, I am definitely interested in collaborating with classmates.
Music 1421 Assignment 0: Nicholas Araya
Hi everyone, I’m Nick, I’m from LA, and I’m a freshman planning to major in Information Science. I’ve been playing piano for 11 years or so, and I’ve used GarageBand a few times, but other than that I have very little experience in music composition.
I’m excited to be in this class and to gain skills in digital music production which I can use to explore various creative ventures. I’ve heard really good things about MUSIC 1421; I’m interested in collaboration with others, and am looking forward to seeing what everyone makes!
Music 1421 Assignment 0: Daryl Choi
Hi all. My name is Daryl Choi and I am a senior, majoring in Chemical Engineering. I am taking this class because I want to be able to express myself artistically and, for this reason, learn how to use audio software. I played tuba and jazz trombone in high school and continue to play piano today. In terms of my music taste, I try to keep an open mind. I enjoy 1600s baroque to 1930s big band jazz to 1990s grunge rock. One thing I’ve noticed, however, is that I go through genre phases — I will cycle between genres over long periods of time.
In terms of my favorite artists, I would choose John Coltrane, Chet Baker, Daniel Caesar, Travis Scott, Mac DeMarco, and Joji.
In terms of my favorite genres, I would choose Jazz, R&B, and Hip Hop.
I look forward to this class and seeing what everyone comes up with.
Music 1421 Assignment 0: Juliette Bendheim
Hi I’m Juliette. I’m a senior studying mechanical engineering interested in robotics, design, and how machines interact with environmental problems. Besides classes I teach for COE, play on the club ice hockey team, and am part of the mechanical team for CUAUV where I design and build autonomous submarines.
I wanted to take this class since I’ve loved music my whole life, but I haven’t been able to do as much here at Cornell. I mostly play piano and sing, but I also dabble in ukulele and used to play classical trumpet. At Cornell I was in Chorale for two years but had to drop due to time. I’m definitely interested in collaborating since I don’t have too much experience on the technical side of music, but I’ve done some music theory and have done a little improv work.
Music 1421 – John Correa
Hello everyone, my name is John Correa. I am a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Statistics and minoring in Business. I have had a love and appreciation for music for as long as I can remember. I played the piano from 1st grade until senior year of high school. In late middle school, I quit piano lesson for a year because I was becoming burned out from my classical training, but soon realized how much I missed playing music and quickly restarted my piano lessons. I also played the cello throughout middle school and was apart of the St. Louis County Middle School Symphony for a year. Most of my earliest musical influences came from my older brothers hand-me-down iPod in the likes of Kid Cudi and early Kanye West. I have no previous experience in producing music, so I am very excited to be able to learn and explore all the tools and resources that this class has to offer. It is my goal to create music that I enjoy listening to and that I can share with those who have similar musical tastes.
