Hi

Hey everyone,

My name’s Jenae and I’m a continuing education student. I have an associate’s in car repair, a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering and a minor in jazz performance, spent most of my career doing acoustics research and noise control in the automotive and mining fields, and now I’m studying music theory and a handful of other things to help me compose music and further explore the intersection between science and sound.

I mostly play alto sax these days, although I’ve played several other instruments as well (guitar, trumpet, piano, etc.) I’ve played in small combos and at the college level I was in the jazz, marching, and concert bands at Carnegie Mellon. At Cornell I’m currently in the Steel Band and the Improvisation Ensemble, and I’ve also played with the Gamelan ensemble in the past. I have experience using Live, ProTools, and Audacity, as well as commercial engineering acoustics analysis and manipulation packages like ArtemiS, PULSE, Pimento, etc. I really like building things and making funky sounds so I expect this course to be a lot of fun!

One artist that has inspired me ever since I heard his talk in Pittsburgh is Eric Singer, who makes musical robots. You can check out his webpage here: http://www.singerbots.com/

Another cool roboticist (with a less slick webpage) is Roger Dannenberg, who you may know better as one of the inventors of Audacity: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rbd/music/

Hello!

Hi everyone,

My name is Emre Fındık and I am a senior studying Computer Science in the College of Engineering. I do a fair amount of songwriting on digital platforms, mostly in rock and related genres. I’m familiar with Cubase, ProTools and Audacity. I play a couple of instruments and sing, though I’ve not been practicing much lately due to classwork and projects. My primary instrument is the piano.

I am also completing the Game Design minor, and MUSIC 2421 was among the several elective courses I could choose from. Due to my background in music and the fact that I always wanted to transfer my skills in digital music production to performing, this course appealed to me the most.

I don’t have any clear creative vision in mind for the course yet, I hope to have an agenda as the semester progresses and I grow more familiar with what I am capable of accomplishing in this class.

hi my name is albert

Hi everyone, my name is Albert. I’m a sophomore studying computer science. My favorite artist is Porter Robinson. I have some experience producing electronic music, but none in live electronic performances. For producing, I mainly use Reason. I hope that this class will provide the opportunity for me to learn how to perform live as well as develop my production skills. I also play the piano. Bieber, Diplo, and Skrillex on Ableton

Skrillex’s words about computer music at the 7:30 mark are inspiring.

Tear Down This Wall!

Hey all,

Some of you heard my project in the morning section. For those of you who have not heard it, here is a link to the piece on Soundcloud. After the morning section, I felt inspired, so I made a couple of minor edits. The piece is intended to be a blend of several different styles, including EDM, jazz, rock, and other genres that I don’t have training in, all through the lens of the Cold War. Please feel free to leave a comment below! I welcome all criticism.

Hi, I am He

(This post is kind of late…)

Hello,

My name is He. I am a senior physics and maths major. I don’t have much music background  but I am very interested in the subject of editting and composing music on computer, and do have a little experience in using some of the music softwares, along with certain relevant knowledge. I think being able to compose our own pieces of music is especially exciting and it can give us a sense of achievement,   so I am glad to enroll in Music  1421 and looking forward to exploring the field throughout the semester and collaborating with everyone else in the class.

Wesley I am

Hello everyone,

My name is Wesley, and I am a senior in the Hotel School. I’ve played guitar for about 5 years now, and only recently began to try to record myself. It was then that I realized I had so much to learn about music production and that’s why I signed up for this course.

I also have played the drums and bass guitar for a few years, and played trumpet all throughout middle school and high school. My passion definitely lies with the electric/acoustic guitar, though!

I am very interested in collaborating with others. I think that collaboration is one of the best ways to broaden one’s musical ability!

Yo, It’s Philippe

Hey guys,

I’m a senior in Mechanical Engineering. I’ve been trying to fit 1421 in my schedule for quite some time. I’m very relieved to take something more creative than math and engineering. I’m really into electronic music like house, techno, trance and EDM, as well as alternative and indie music. I used to mess around quite a bit with Garageband in middle school and some in high school just for fun. I got into Ableton late in high school, but have always had limitations with the software. I don’t think I’m too bad at mashups though. Find my Soundcloud at: boi chips. Don’t worry, the name is a joke.

Cheers,

Philippe

Hey guys, I’m Nick

Hey! My name is Nick and I am a senior studying economics in the Arts and Sciences School. My only formal music training would be my ~3 years of piano lessons when I was in elementary school.

As with nearly everyone, although I have always loved music, my interests seemed peak as I grew older and my experiences broadened, especially in college. While I appreciate virtually all forms of music, my favorite genres include hip-hop, punk rock, various forms of electronic / techno, and the more-recently popular trap. I want to explore creating music within each of these genres, but I think right now my primary end goal for the class is to develop a fluid and creative trap song. Within trap, my favorite artists include Baauer, Yellow Claw, and RL Grime, but there is so much good trap music on the internet that my playlists are always evolving. Additionally, I love the sounds of Kanye’s Yeezus album (especially “Hold My Liquor” and “I am a God”) and want to experiment with something along those lines.

I am very open to collaborating with anybody in the class, so please reach out to me if you have any ideas!

Hey I’m Zander

Hey everyone, my name is Alexander Cammarata, but you can call me Zander. I am a senior in the Hotel School and am very excited about this course. I used to play the guitar for a few years in elementary school/middle school, but stopped playing when I started high school. I don’t think I’ve picked up a guitar since then, so I essentially have no musical skills. I have enjoyed listening to a variety of music all my life. I recently started listening to electronic music, more specifically deep house and techno music, and began to wonder how this music is made. I am interested in learning to create this type of music, so I thought this class would be a perfect place to start. I would welcome the opportunity to collaborate with others who are also interested in this type of music.
