Hey everyone, my name’s Jack and I’m a junior studying information science. My musical experience started when I was in elementary school, playing the string bass for my school’s orchestra. I played string bass all the way through high school, but I never really found a real interest in making music until I picked up the guitar in late high school. I wish I played more consistently, but in the past few years it’s become more of a decoration in my room. As much as this year’s Covid situation has been horrible, the one silver lining that came out of it for me was picking up the guitar again with my (ample) free time. Since quarantine, I’ve started writing some music on my guitar, and recently started experimenting recording with Logic. I’m taking this class because I found a real interest and appreciation for music production this year, and I want to better develop creatively and hone my skills. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone this semester and I’m down to collaborate!
Assignment 0: Nathan Huang
Hello everyone,
My name’s Nathan and I’m a sophomore intending to major in materials science and engineering and minor in computer science. I played the piano and clarinet throughout high school, although I haven’t really kept up on playing those instruments since college started. I’ve experimented around with FL Studio 12 for a while now, teaching myself from YouTube videos, but I’m definitely still very inexperienced. I primarily listen to various EDM artists, which is what got me interested in making electronic music myself. I’d love to collaborate with others, just let me know if you’re interested!
Assignment 0: Jack Samett
Hi everyone. My name’s Jack Samett and I’m currently a senior in AEM. I enrolled in this class due to my general love for music, as well as the rave reviews that I’ve heard regarding the course. My musical background is limited at best, although I did play guitar and write music up until around age 12. Unfortunately, that skill is long forgotten and my only current relation to the music industry is as a consumer. I’ve always regretted not sticking with an instrument, and I see this class as a chance to get back to producing music.
I’m looking forward to developing my own projects and am very open to collaboration since, as I mentioned, my musical prowess leaves a bit to be desired.
Excited for the semester.
Jack
Assignment 0: Ben Goldberg
Hey everyone! I’m a senior Computer Science major in the Engineering School, and I have played guitar and piano for 10+ years. I have recently been getting into digital music production with Logic and DJing, but I’m still learning about both. I took this class to fill in the gaps in my understanding about DAWs and music production, and also to have the opportunity to create some cool music. My favorite genre of music is EDM, but I also like rock and acoustic music a lot. I’m looking forward to a fun semester!
-Ben
Assignment 0: Kane Tian
Hi y’all,
I’m a senior majoring in CS, but with a strong interest in music. I’ve played piano for 10+ years, but quit in college and picked up some vocal training. I’ve made my own music in the past (producing in Logic + vocals), and have experience collaborating with friends on projects. I’m most interested in R&B, Pop, and Hip-Hop; some of my favorite artists include Frank Ocean, Daniel Caesar, Kanye, Jorja Smith, and Omar Apollo. I hope I can improve on the technical aspects of producing and make music I can be proud of. Down to collab with people!
– Kane
Assignment 0: Jack Weber
Hi I’m Jack Weber. I’m a senior in CS. Musically my background solely lies with the guitar (and ukulele). I’ve been playing guitar casually on and off since I was 5. I’ve had varying levels of involvement with and mostly just played for my own enjoyment and not performance. Although since quarantine I’ve been taking it more seriously and playing a lot more. I play everything from blues, to rockabilly, to math rock, really I can find interest in playing almost any kind of music. I would love to be able to use samples of my guitar to mix on the computer. My musical interest is extremely varied as far as what I like to listen to and play so I’d be open to collaborating on a variety of different kinds of projects. I look forward to getting to know everyone and hopefully making some cool music this semester.
Assignment 0: Sai Mallipedhi
Hey y’all, my name is Sai and I’m a senior majoring in Chemical Engineering. Growing up, I played trombone extensively but then unfortunately quit in high school because of a horrible teacher. I’ve gotten very into electronic music over the past year, and during quarantine, I got really into DJing and seeing how different DJ’s mix tracks. I also developed a big interest in music theory and would love to learn more about it in this class. I started playing piano 3 months ago to better understand music theory and maybe even produce in the future. I also have a DJ controller and am trying to learn mixing techniques this semester.
My interests definitely lay more on the technical side of music production. Hit me up if you’re interested in a collaboration!
Assignment 0: Chris O’Brian
Hey everyone – I’m Chris O’Brian, a senior CS major. I can’t say I know a whole lot about electronic music, nor do I have a whole lot of experience in this area….but it’s something I’ve been trying to learn about for quite a while. I’ve been playing guitar for quite a while (since 3rd grade, maybe?) and know a little bass and piano, too. I played a lot back in high school with a couple student groups, but I haven’t really had the chance to get anything serious rolling here at Cornell, but I still play when I can. I haven’t done much composing of my own pieces, aside from a few improvisation recordings and am looking forward to this class giving me some experience with that and letting me put together some cool stuff!
I’d say I’m coming at this class from the technical side: I’ve got a bunch of experience working as an “audio editor” and board op — idk what the right words for this jobs are — but I know my way around Pro Tools and I’ve been working for nearly two years now on-and-off with Cornell Productions and Bailey Hall running sound for events. This has been giving me a little peak into the work of digital music synthesis, sequencing, etc. and I thought it would be fun to learn more by taking this course.
Plus, I am always willing to collaborate on cool projects! Lmk.
Assignment 0: Luc Wetherbee
Hey folks, I’m Luc. I’m a senior chemistry major and Spanish minor. I have a pretty broad music taste, but I gravitate most strongly toward death and doom metal and other adjacent metal subgenres. I also like a wide range of electronic music, from well-known electro house and melodic dubstep to breakcore and dark industrial. I’ve also been riding the hyperpop wave that has surged in very recent years. I’ve been interested in making electronic music for a while, and one of my goals in making music is finding out what styles I enjoy producing the most.
While I’ve picked up and never committed to a few instruments, most of my DAW experience comes from playing around with LMMS and Reason. What I want to learn from this course the most is how to familiarize myself with the technical aspects of music production so that they are less intimidating, and how to make my own samples.
Assignment 0: Kaushik Ravikumar
Hi 🙂 I’m Kaushik, a senior computer science major. I played the guitar throughout high school, but not as much during college. One of my biggest passions has always been listening to music and towards the end of high school I started dabbling with the idea of also making music.
Some of my biggest influences are artists like Kanye West, Aries, Dominic Fike, Young Thug, Tyler The Creator, Mac Miller, Travis Scott, and many more. A lot of the music I like to make takes inspiration from whatever I’m listening to at the moment. I listen to a wide range of music, mostly hip-hop and indie/rock.
In my senior year of high school, me and a couple friends made a mixtape and dropped it on SoundCloud. I love to rap/sing, which I’ve mostly done over Youtube Type beats and recorded using my headphones mic and Garageband. I recently got into producing and composing instrumentals as well using FL Studio.
I’m really looking forward to this class and hope to have the opportunity to learn in depth about more of the general technical skills required in producing music using computer software. I also hope to learn a little more about music theory and some of the sonic techniques used by artists in the music industry.
