hey, diego here (*trance addict*)

hey everybody,

My name is Diego, i'm a mechanical engineer, and a trance addict. Not 'cheesy' trance either, but real melodic or banging tunes. some of the artists that have had a considerable impact on me are paul van dyk, ferry corsten, NU NRG, and armin van buuren. not to mention countless other individual tracks.

My passion for this electronic dance music has gone far past normal listening. 5 years ago, I fell in love with trance music, and now you can often find me going to clubs and events where my favorite dj's and producer's are mixing. (money and time depending) I began mixing on my cd decks back home last year and have recently learned a good bit on harmonic mixing, which was my first goal.

My next goal is to produce a quality trance track that get's produced and playlisted by all the major dj's. I would love to see my name on a vinyl one day. I would love to be in the crowd when it get's blasted from the speakers so i could see people dance to my sound.

I don't have much musical background. i played violin for a year a long time ago. I took a few piano lessons at the beginning of the summer, but had to stop for summer classes. Then I started to learn a thing or two about chords in hopes that some theory could help me reach my goal.  I don't really play an instrument now (does a mixer, or midi keyboard count?)

Heya

So blog for the first time I shall (who has time to blog now adays?....apparently everyone but me!)  Well, I was introduced to techno around middle school - you know: Prodigy, Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, etc.  Then come high school my friends introduced me to trance - oh the wonders of trance.  Paul van Dyk, The Thrillseekers, and Jose Amnesia are the three artists who got me hooked (the song playing on Jose Amnesia's intro page is the one I fell in love with).  Since then, I haven't looked back :p.  I've done a few remixes using the loop program, FL Studio (Darren Tate - Fall From Grace and Perry O'Neil - Wave Force).  I hope to remaster them in class as they weren't quite what I hoped for.  I played tenor sax for a few years, but stopped when I came to Cornell.  Oh yeah - and I'm a sophomore majoring in econ and asian studies.  Bloggin' out.

Nate's Intro

Hey everyone,

I’m a junior in Electrical and Computer Engineering, although I try to fit in music/audio courses when I can. (I just took PHYS/MUSIC 204: Physics of Musical Sound with Dr. Kathy Selby and highly recommend it to anyone interested.) I love music but haven’t had too much formal training. I started out learning the piano from my mom; I’ve also picked up the guitar, love to sing, and even got to play around with the marimba my dad built this summer.

My musical background is mostly in punk/hardcore/indie rock and I played guitar and sung in a local band (Red Over Red) for a little while. Now that the band has broken up, I think this class will be a great musical outlet for me. I’m sure this will be a fun semester and I look forward to getting to know some of you better, plus hopefully hearing some awesome music. ;-)

An introduction

Hi everyone, my name is Alan Ra, and I'm a freshman in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Music is one of my main potential majors. My primary instrument is piano, but I also play a lot of drums and percussion, and guitar. I can play bass, banjo, and flute, too. However, my main concentration in music is in composition. My favorite composers who incorporate electronics in their works include Iannis Xenakis, Morton Subotnick, Alvin Lucier, Edgard Varese, Ron Kuivila, Laetitia Sonami, Jim Fox, and Michael Byron. I also enjoy a lot of non-classical music that incorporates electronics, such as EKG, Nachtluft, Keith Rowe, Thomas Lehn, Marcus Schmickler, Radian, Masonna, Fat Day, Parts & Labor, Tyondai Braxton, and a lot of hip-hop (M.I.A., Aesop Rock, El-P, Mr. Lif, cLOUDDEAD, Doseone, Dead Prez, Beans, Dalek, etc.).

One of my main musical projects right now is in electroacoustic concrète. Though there is definitely no set methodology, I will often incorporate non-idiomatic improvisation and draw from that source, creating severely down-sampled deconstructions.
