My name is Matt Miller.  I’m a senior studying computer science.

I am very fussy about my music.  For starters, I probably don’t like it if it has lyrics.  I played percussion in band for elementary school and high school, which was good because it was all instrumental.  I ended up usually playing timpani during high school, mostly because everyone else was too afraid to touch them, and also because they are great.  I also performed with the orchestra and the choir whenever they needed the timps.

My name is Adam Davis and I am a senior economics major.  I played jazz saxophone from 4th grade until senior year of high school, so I would say my musical roots lie in jazz.  Since then, I’ve gotten pretty into hip-hop (but I love all genres of music…except maybe Country); I’ve used Logic Pro pretty extensively to make beats and such (mostly hip-hop, some alternative/electronic), but I haven’t really experimented with other DAWs, which is something I’m looking forward to trying.

Hey Everyone,

My name is Stephanie Grant, and I’m a senior at Cornell.  Since it’s my last semester, it’s a great time for me to take other classes that directly correspond to my interests.

I’ve used music software such as Cubase and Protools in the the past.
I’ve been playing acoustic guitar for 8 1/2 years, piano for 6 years.  I enjoy playing piano by ear and making covers of popular music.
I am an Alto singer, and I also play Ukelele and just recently began to play the acoustic bass.
I can also beatbox (for fun anyways).

Due to my music inclination, I thought this class would be an awesome learning experience which would help me explore music even further.  I’ve been really busy for the past few semesters and haven’t had the chance to be in Lincoln and play music as much as I’d like to.  I’m also hoping to learn more about remixing, and making some cool beats.   I want to go into Entertainment Law in the future, specifically Music law, so learning more about the technical side would really help!

Hello Everyone,

My name is Austin Opatrny. I am a senior from New York City majoring in Economics and Asian Studies in Arts & Sciences, in addition to the University Business Minor. I am finished with all required classwork, which allows me to take cool classes like this one!

I played piano (classical) and trumpet for eight years each. I continue to practice piano occasionally at Cornell – I’m fortunate enough to have a keyboard in my living room. I also have started playing around with turntables and making short mixes, but my technological expertise is…limited. My father majored in music at Yale and studied composition with Nadia Boulanger, and has had a large formative influence on my musical tastes. They’ve evolved into a very eclectic and very, very hipster mix.

I look forward to trying to recreate classic ’90s Chicago House and Garage using skills I will learn in this class. I also will probably try to make a couple trashy EDM drop-fests because why not?

Hi Guys!

My name is Jeff, and I am a senior majoring in computer science. I have always wanted to take this class since freshman year, and I have finally made it in my last semester! Just to keep things short, I guess I’m going to use bullet points…

1. I play the piano by ear, and I used to be a member of Piannovation, Cornell Piano Society’s performance team
2. I can also beatbox and kind of drum (I “drum” especially well on Android/iOS…)
3. I am from Hong Kong, and I can freestyle in Cantonese
4. I currently play for the HKSA band (Hong Kong Student Association)
5. I am interested in a wide variety of music, from EDM, Dubstep to R&B, Rap, and even Cantonese/Mandarin Pop.
6. My main goal for the class is to learn how to produce high quality EDM! but of course I am also open to any interesting ideas throughout the semester.

My name is Jil Sanchez and I’m a senior urban and regional studies major in AAP.

Ever since I stopped playing the flute in the first grade (…), I’ve been more of a music consumer than producer. I adore EDM and electronic music in general (these days it’s specifically trance, house, and downtempo, but I’ll get happily lost in anything with an awesome beat and good vibes), and am taking this class to begin understanding how it’s made and to deepen my appreciation of music in general.

My name is Kevin Nielsen. I recently moved here from Madrid, Spain to study Hotel Administration. I have always had a passion for music but have never pursued it. I have some experience playing the Piano. I am hoping to minor in music and explore different areas of the Cornell music department. I am hoping that this class will provide an introductory foundation to new software that I would not have had a chance to explore otherwise. I am not sure what to expect from the course but I am sure that it will be a great experience.

Hi, my name is Julia Klein and I’m a sophomore doing a double major in my independent major which is Music & Neurobiology and a major in Psychology. I am pursuing the Computing in the Arts Minor from the Psychology track and I’m definitely looking forward to Music 1421. I am a singer/songwriter and I also play piano/guitar/ukelele. I’d be happy to collaborate with other people! I have some knowledge of Logic Pro X and am looking forward to branching out and learning about new programs. I’m very into indie/folk music, but my own music is more pop soul-esque. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone else!

Hi Everybody!

My name is Gavin Acres. I’m a second-semester senior, double-majoring in Applied Economics & Management and Communication, while minoring in Information Science.

Coming from a dairy farm, there wasn’t much else to do while milking cows but sing a LOT. I’ve done quite a bit of singing in the past, participating in five musicals and three different vocal groups in high school. I’d be happy to add my baritone voice to any singing you need help with.

I also know how to play rhythm guitar at what I would qualify as an intermediate level. I’ve been writing my own songs for a while now and, since college, have been fiddling with ProTools and Audacity to record them. I really struggle, however, with writing lyrics and would appreciate help in that area during this semester.

I’ve been really getting into indie electronic music for the past couple years, with bands you’ve never heard like Faded Paper Figures and Freelance Whales. I’d like to emulate a sound like these bands whiAs such, I’ve been very interested in how those sounds are created via software interfaces and would like to learn more about synthesizers, mastering, etc.
